Gosport Borough Council in partnership with Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) has secured funding of £1.78 million to implement a four year High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme.
Across the High Street and Stoke Road conservation areas, several projects are underway which plan to transform disused or underused high street buildings and establish new creative, cultural, residential and commercial opportunities.
Along with our partners there will opportunities for you to get involved, from working with Hampshire Cultural Trust on exhibitions for Gosport Museum and Art Gallery, contributing ideas for the Imagination Refinery and developing our historic alleyways.
Gosport Museum & Art Gallery
The Old Grammar School will be transformed into a vibrant community hub with a new museum, studio and workshop spaces, a café, craft shop and education programme.
This project will provide funding grants for property owners to improve the visual appearance and usage of historic buildings in Stoke Road and High Street conservation areas.
Royal Arms Hotel
This is the main focal project within Stoke Road with plans to deliver the restoration of the Royal Arms canopy and establish new uses for the vacant front spaces.
Find out about our other projects
While Gosport Museum and Art Gallery is closed to the public for major development work, a temporary pop-up museum is set to be launched in one of the vacant properties on the high street.
Making Better Places
This project seeks to involve local people in activities and actions that will make the town centre a more invigorating and vibrant place to live and enjoy.
Our Historic Alleyways
This project will seek to interpret the streetscape of Gosport’s HSHAZ, increasing the visibility of Gosport’s heritage and telling the story of our unique alleyways.
We Love Gosport Market
We want to help boost the vitality and sustainability of the high street and our HSHAZ is exploring how the current market can play central role in this.
The Imagination Refinery
These projects seek to bring back into use vacant units on the high street providing a business incubator and co-working space for start-up businesses, creatives and local entrepreneurs.
Revitalising Historic High Streets
High Streets Heritage Action Zones
The High Streets Heritage Action Zones is a £95 million government-funded programme led by Historic England, designed to secure lasting improvements and help breathe new life into our historic high streets for the communities and businesses that use them. Historic England is working with local people and partners to unlock the rich heritage on these high streets, through repair and improvement works as well as arts and cultural programmes, making them more attractive to residents, businesses, tourists and investors.
